Welcome to Dhaka Commerce College

In the late 1980s when the country was going through political turmoil a few eminent educationists and patrons of education felt the necessity to found an exceptional institution free from politics and smoking for the expansion of business studies in Dhaka. In continuation of this concept the project implementation committee held its first meeting on 06 October 1988 with Kazi Nurul Islam Faruky as the convener, the then Associate Professor of Management at Dhaka College. A.B.M Abul Quashem, the then Education Inspector of the Department of Audit and Inspection, was the co-convener. M Helal, editor, the monthly Bishyabidyalaya Campus was a member and Mahfuzul Haq Shahin was member secretary. SR Mojumdar, Lecturer of Management, Dhaka College and Md. Shafiqul Islam (Chunnu), Md Nurul Islam Siddiqui are notable among the other members.

In the first meeting the members unanimously named the college as `Dhaka Commerce College’ . Besides, a bank account in the name of the college was opened at City Bank’s New Market branch.

Dhaka Commerce College Began its journey formally in 1989 by setting up its sing board at King Khaled Institute. Initially the institution operated in rented houses at Lalmatia and Dhanmondi. In January 1995 it shifted to its own campus at Mirpur . Shamsul Huda, FCA took charge as the first Principal of the college. Professor kazi Faruky took over as the Principal in deputation in August 1990 and continued up to September 2010. Currently he is the Honorary Professor of the institution.

Dhaka Commerce College is the first self-financed, politics and smoking free institution of Bangladesh. Among the founders of this College the following Personalities are noteable- Professor Shafayat Ahmed Siddiqui, Agrabad Women’s College; Dr Md Habib Ullah, Professor of Accounting, University of Dhaka; Kazi Md Nurul Islam Faruky, Associate Professor of Management, Dhaka College; AFM Sarwar Kamal, Deputy Secretary, Cabinet Division, Md Shamsul Huda, Director (Finance), Nawab Abdul Malek Jute Mills; A.B.M Abul Quashem, Md Abul Bashar, Principal, Azam khan Commerce College, Khulna; M Helal, Md Shafiqul Islam (Chunnu), Mahafuzul Haque Shahin, Md Nurul Islam Siddiqui, ABM Shamsuddin Ahmed; Chattogram Govt Commerce College Alumni Association(Dhaka).

Mr Mohammed Twaha was the first president of the organizing committee of Dhaka Commerce College. Professor Abdur Rashid Chowdhury was the president of the executive committee. Dr Shahid Uddin Ahmed acted as the president of the first and the second Governing Body and the third Governing Body was led by Professor Dr Shafiq Ahmed Siddiq, Dept of Accounting and Information System, University of Dhaka, and Chairman, Bureau of Business Research. The fourth Governing Body was headed by AFM Sarwar Kamal, former Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the people’s Republic of Bangladesh and The 5th Governing Body was headed by Professor Dr Shafiq Ahmed Siddiq.

At Present the academic activities are undergoing in two multi storied fully air conditioned buildings. There is a separate administrative building here. There is a modernized auditorium with a sitting capacity of 1600 and a 120 seat hostel for female students within the college campus. There are two 12 storied and 8 storied residential buildings which accommodate 76 teachers and the living quarters of the Principal and the Vice-Principal.

It is to note that the academic activities began with the higher secondary classes in 1989 and the B.com (pass) Courses were introduced in 1990. With the approval of National University Honours and Masters courses in various subjects were introduced from the 1994-95 session. The four year BBA Professional Courses were introduced from the 1997-98 session. At Present BBA Courses are offered in Management, Accounting, Marketing, Finance and Banking along with MBS and higher secondary courses. Besides, Honours and Masters course are taught in BBA Professional, English and Economics. Recently Honours courses in Computer Science have been introduced and the process of introducing Honours courses in Bangla and Statistics is underway.

The institution which began its journey with only 98 students in 1989 now has almost 7 thousand students. Initially there were 4 teachers and 1 staff which now increased to 176 and 132 respectively. The Current Principal is Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Masud.

Dhaka Commerce College is on exceptional institution for Business studies and Science in all respect. The Primary goal of this institution is to educate the students with a combination of both theoretical and practical education. Besides, there is a sound practice of maintaining discipline, ideal and regulations. Consequently the administrative, academic and infrastructural development of this college has reached an unbelievable height in the last 29 years. This is illustrated in the enviable results of the students in Board and University examinations.
